The Omniscience of God

“Lord, You have examined me and You know me. You know everything I do; from far away You understand all my thoughts. You see me, whether I am working or resting; You know all my actions. Even before I speak, You already know what I will say. You are all round me on every side; You protect me with your power.” Psalms 139:1-5 GNB

GOD KNOWS ALL THINGS. This pretty much sums up the perfection God’s MENTAL ATTRIBUTES; and that’s all we need to know about the extent of the Lord’s knowledge — He knows everything!

I’ll be sharing about these divine attributes in the coming weeks. This week, let me begin with the KNOWLEDGE of God — also known as the OMNISCIENCE of God.

MENTAL ATTRIBUTES

Omniscience (Knowledge)ForeknowledgeOmnisapience (Wisdom)Truthfulness

GOD IS OMNISCIENT. Omniscient means all-knowing. His knowledge is perfect, infinite, and eternal. Nothing escapes His notice. Nothing can be hidden from Him. Nothing is forgotten by Him.

THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD IS PERFECT. The Lord possesses perfect knowledge — that of which He did not learn. He is self-sufficient; therefore, He has no need to learn. He is self-existent; therefore, He has never learned. He is immutable, omnipotent, and omniscient, all at the same time; therefore, He never changes, never errs, never overlooks anything.

THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD IS INFINITE. God is the source and author of all things; hence He knows everything instantly and effortlessly. He knows every matter, every mind, every heart, every creature, every being, every thought, every feeling, every desire, every secret, everything visible and invisible in heaven and in earth. He knows all things perfectly — not knowing a thing more than another, but all things equally well.

THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD IS ETERNAL. The Lord doesn’t only know what has happened in the past, and He is not just thoroughly acquainted with everything that is now transpiring in the entire universe; He is also perfectly aware of every event that will happen in the days and ages to come. God dwells in eternity; therefore, His knowledge of the future is as complete as His knowledge of the past and the present, and that because the future depends entirely upon Himself.

GOD SEES. GOD KNOWS. GOD CARES.

BE ALARMED! That God knows each person through and through can be a cause of shaking fear to someone who has something to hide — some unforsaken sin, some secret crime against man or God. Nothing can be hidden from Him, there’s literally no place to hide! He knows every purpose and every motive of every sinful conduct; and He never accepts lame excuses for it.

BE AMAZED! How unspeakably sweet is the knowledge that our Heavenly Father knows us completely! And how incredibly comforting is the idea that though we do not know what tomorrow may bring forth, God knows! Everything in the future is open to His omniscient gaze.

BE IN AWE! The whole of our lives stood open to His view from the very beginning. He foresaw our every fall and our every sin; still, He had His heart fixed upon us. May the realization of this awesome love and grace make us all bow in wonder and worship before Him!

BE ASSURED! Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, when He walked among us, felt our pains in their naked intensity of anguish. His knowledge of our afflictions and adversities is more than just theoretical — it is personal, warm, and compassionate. Whatever may befall us, God knows and cares as no one else can. ❤️

“Your knowledge of me is too deep; it is beyond my understanding.” Psalms 139:6 GNB

  1. This was the last lesson at the recently concluded Vacation Bible Camp that our youngest participated at. And I guess, the topic in today’s preaching re how God has intercepted Isaac’s plans and it’s just humbling to be reminded that our thoughts are not his thoughts and his ways are not our ways.
